OpenAI Prepares Record Breaking Private Round at Huge Valuation

Share

OpenAI is reportedly working on a massive private funding round reaching up to $30 billion as it weighs a potential public market debut.

OpenAI leadership and headquarters concept

According to TechCrunch reporting citing CNBC and Bloomberg, the artificial intelligence developer is currently negotiating terms for a private funding round that could value the company at $1.25 trillion before the investment. CNBC reported that the round is being led by Coatue alongside investors based in the United Arab Emirates. A prior report from Bloomberg published a month earlier indicated a potential $30 billion raise at a $1.4 trillion valuation, though both outlets noted that terms remain under negotiation and could still shift.

CNBC also reported that the capital injection from the UAE might include a separate agreement to secure additional computing infrastructure for OpenAI. OpenAI declined to comment on the funding reports.

If OpenAI secures a valuation exceeding $1 trillion in this upcoming round, it would establish a new record as the most highly valued private enterprise in history. This milestone would also set a remarkably high financial benchmark for the company's anticipated initial public offering. OpenAI submitted confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, following a March funding round that valued the creator of ChatGPT at $852 billion after investments.

The massive figures surrounding OpenAI could additionally influence the market expectations for Anthropic, another major artificial intelligence competitor that also submitted confidential IPO paperwork in June. CNBC reported that Anthropic is aiming for a public market valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion. Anthropic previously secured $65 billion in May at a valuation of $965 billion.

Background

The latest fundraising efforts follow a period of intense financial activity across the artificial intelligence sector. OpenAI previously closed a funding round in March that established an $852 billion post money valuation. Meanwhile, competitor Anthropic raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation before both companies submitted confidential initial public offering documents in June.

Why It Matters

Reaching a private valuation above $1 trillion represents an unprecedented scale for any venture backed enterprise. This move signals that leading artificial intelligence developers continue to require immense amounts of capital to fund their infrastructure and compute needs before entering the public markets. The talks involving UAE investors and compute capacity agreements also highlight how closely intertwined artificial intelligence development has become with sovereign energy and infrastructure deals. Furthermore, these towering valuations could redefine public market expectations for the entire artificial intelligence sector once OpenAI and Anthropic proceed with their public listings.
