Mass Effect 5 Canceled After BioWare Closes Following EA Buyout

BioWare has shut down and its next Mass Effect game has been canceled following a major corporate restructuring and studio layoffs at Electronic Arts.

The closure of BioWare brings an end to a studio history spanning more than three decades of role-playing games, as reported by Eurogamer. The shutdown follows an acquisition of Electronic Arts by a group of investment firms including Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners for 55 billion dollars. Eurogamer noted that EA is planning to cut roughly 400 jobs across the company as part of a pivot toward live service shooters and sports. BioWare previously faced turbulence following the release of Anthem and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which Eurogamer stated failed to meet internal sales expectations.

Before the closure, a small team of about 50 developers was working on the next Mass Effect project, according to PC Gamer. Cinematic supervisor Tony de Waal shared on LinkedIn that the team aimed to deliver a level of player autonomy and choice unmatched by other games, drawing inspiration from recent titles by Larian and CD Projekt while staying true to the original trilogy. De Waal also highlighted the technical challenges of developing Dragon Age: The Veilguard within the Frostbite engine, noting the complexity required to make a variable player character function across more than three hours of cinematics.

While the video game project has ended, the franchise may still continue on television. IGN reported exclusively that a Mass Effect television series remains in active development at Amazon MGM Studios within Prime Video. Sources inside Prime Video confirmed to IGN that the creative team remains attached to the project, which has been in development since 2024. The series is being run by Doug Jung and written by Daniel Casey, with a production team that includes Mike Gamble from BioWare. The show is set after the original game trilogy rather than retelling Commander Shepard's origin story, though it currently lacks a release date.

Why It Matters

The closure of BioWare and the cancellation of its early stage Mass Effect project highlight the shifting priorities of major publishers toward live service titles and risk mitigation. The studio behind influential role-playing franchises like Baldur's Gate and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has left a lasting mark on the industry, making its abrupt closure a significant moment for single player narrative development. At the same time, the continuation of the Prime Video adaptation suggests that intellectual properties from closed studios can still find alternate pathways forward in multimedia formats, even as interactive development stalls.
