According to Eurogamer, former PlayStation chief Kazuo "Kaz" Hirai has disclosed that he frequently bypassed commands from senior Sony leadership during his tenure leading the gaming brand. Speaking in an interview published by Japanese publication Nikkei XTrend and translated by Game Observer, Hirai recounted how he managed corporate bureaucracy in the early 2000s.
Hirai, who served as the president of Sony Computer Entertainment from 2007 to 2012, explained that he dismissed guidance from then-CEO Howard Stringer and other corporate heads. He adopted an independent stance for the gaming division, telling colleagues that headquarters instructions were secondary to PlayStation's path. Hirai led the gaming unit through a pivotal era that followed the rollout of the PlayStation 3, alongside the difficult release of the PlayStation Vita and a major network outage in 2011, as well as the memorable E3 2006 presentation.
Later, Hirai transitioned to succeed Stringer as the chief executive officer of the entire corporation during a challenging operational phase. Reflecting on his promotion, Hirai noted that his initial priorities centered on personal introduction and unifying employee efforts, emphasizing that mutual respect is vital for team motivation. Ironically, after taking the top role, Hirai sought to stop other business units from operating independently in the manner he once practiced at PlayStation, introducing the "kando" corporate strategy focused on emotional connection through products.
What This Means
Hirai's recollection highlights the historical friction that can exist between large corporate parent companies and specialized gaming divisions. When Hirai later assumed the role of corporate CEO, his push to unify disparate units and implement the "kando" strategy suggests an effort to eliminate the very departmental silos he previously leveraged to protect PlayStation. This dynamic illustrates the ongoing operational challenges conglomerates face when balancing autonomous creative units with enterprise-wide alignment.
