Apple has acknowledged a network connectivity issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network in the United States, as reported by Engadget. The bug causes impacted devices to lose cellular reception entirely, displaying an "SOS" symbol in the status bar. When active, the issue prevents users from placing phone calls, sending text messages, or accessing 4G and 5G cellular data.
While Apple has issued software updates to prevent the bug, these fixes will not restore service for devices that have already been disconnected. Instead, Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac that users experiencing the permanent signal loss must seek a physical hardware replacement. Affected customers are advised to contact Apple Support or AT&T to initiate the exchange process.
To protect devices that have not yet been affected, Apple strongly advises all AT&T-connected iPhone 18 Pro Max owners to update their software immediately. Users should install the newly released iOS 27.0.1 by going to Settings, selecting General, and tapping Software Update. Additionally, a carrier settings update is rolling out to help prevent the issue, which users can prompt by navigating to Settings, tapping General, and selecting About.
Interestingly, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the sole model in the current U.S. lineup that utilizes a Qualcomm modem rather than Apple's proprietary in-house hardware. However, Apple has not confirmed if there is any correlation between the Qualcomm component and the cellular glitch.
What This Means
This situation highlights the complex logistics of managing mixed-hardware supply chains. Because the iPhone 18 Pro Max uses a Qualcomm modem while other models transition to Apple's own silicon, isolated hardware-specific bugs can occur. Furthermore, the necessity of a physical device replacement rather than a standard software patch presents a notable inconvenience for affected customers and may temporarily increase the service workload for AT&T and Apple support teams.
