Google Pixel Watch safety feature losing free LTE access

Google is terminating free cellular access to its Safety Signal feature on older LTE-enabled smartwatches. As reported by The Verge, the change will affect users of the LTE versions of the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 who do not have an active mobile carrier subscription for their wearable device.

Safety Signal has previously allowed users to utilize critical safety utilities—including Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, and Safety Check—over an LTE network without requiring a separate smartwatch data plan. This complimentary connectivity was bundled as part of a Google Health Premium subscription. After December 12th, Google will discontinue this free access, requiring users to pay for a mobile plan to continue using Safety Signal on LTE networks.

Google plans to alert existing users through device notifications and emails. Affected users will have a 30-day transition window starting when the email is sent, though all free LTE access will end after the mid-December cutoff. Even without a cellular plan, these emergency tools will continue to function after the deadline, provided the watch remains connected to Wi-Fi or is paired to a smartphone via Bluetooth.

This shift represents a notable change in how Google manages its premium wearable ecosystems. By decoupling free LTE-backed safety services from Google Health Premium, the company is shifting the recurring costs of cellular connectivity directly to the end user. For consumers who purchased LTE models specifically to have an independent safety net without an extra phone bill, this update reduces the standalone utility of their devices.
