Apple Unveils First In-House Smart Home Hardware Lineup

Smart home devices arranged on a clean modern surface

Apple has officially introduced its first branded line of smart home products after more than a decade of relying exclusively on third-party manufacturers to build devices for its platform. According to reporting by The Verge, the new Apple Home Collection includes cameras, thermostats, sensors, a smart door lock, and a video doorbell. These items were codeveloped alongside LG Electronics and Schneider Electric and debut alongside HomeView, which serves as the company's first smart display.

Kaiann Drance, vice president of product marketing for home at Apple, explained during an event in New York that the timing was driven by technological readiness. The convergence of the Matter open smart home standard and advancements in AI, which enabled a more conversational Siri voice assistant, made the creation of dedicated home hardware feasible. Drance noted that the products are designed to offer a cohesive aesthetic and a streamlined user experience.

Setup for the new hardware relies on a simple tap with an iPhone, eliminating the need for separate user accounts or third-party applications. The lineup utilizes Thread for connectivity, and devices feature end-to-end encryption to maintain user privacy. While products like the smart lock, thermostats, and sensors are Matter-compatible, the cameras depend on Apple's HomeKit Secure Video rather than Matter. Pricing for the hardware ranges between $200 and $400, and camera history requires an active iCloud Plus plan.

What This Means

Apple's move into branded smart home hardware represents a strategic shift from an open buffet approach toward a curated product ecosystem. By offering a streamlined starter kit codeveloped with established partners like LG and Schneider Electric, the company aims to reduce consumer friction points such as complex installation processes and fragmented app management. However, entering a mature market dominated by Amazon and Google presents notable hurdles, particularly given the steep starting price points.

Industry research indicates that while consumer loyalty to existing smart home ecosystems is not absolute, high acquisition costs and established competitor footholds remain significant barriers. By focusing on deep integration, local processing capabilities, and data privacy features, Apple is targeting its loyal user base rather than attempting an immediate overhaul of existing multi-brand households. Whether this curated path can convince hesitant consumers to adopt smart home technology will depend on how effectively the hardware performs outside of controlled testing environments.
